Praiano
is one of the most precious and refined touristic resort of the Amalfi coast, like a diamond is set in the most beatiful inlet, in the center between Positano and Amalfi.
Praiano offers a sublime view, in fact it is possible to admire the beautiful ring of Lattari mountains, which surrounds Positano and the visitor's gaze is rapt by the achipelago of Sirenuse (Li Galli Islands) and the magnificent and powerful island of Capri.
Praiano has very old origins, even preceding the Republic of Amalfi.
Since the I cent., rich villas, belonging to imperor powers, were to emperors and rich roman people disposition.
The village is really old and this is testified by the origin of the his name: Pelagianum ( which means open sea in Latin),later changed in Plagianum and finally Praiano.
In the centre of the village, in a view point, is located the most important church of Praiano, in honour of the patron saint, St Luke Evangelist.
The church was built in 1588 and is chacterised by majolic art, in traditional amalfi style; it has a simple and white facade, attuned to the surrounding environment.
The south part of Praiano goes over Marina di Praia, the only landing place of the old Plagianum, with a beach digged between two high walls of rocks, at the opening of the rough gorge of Praia.
Nowadays Marina di Praia is an appreciate and organised seaside resort.
It is possible to reach other villages of the Amalfi coast through brief boat excursions.
The picturesque Grottos of Suppraiano and African Grotto constitute an inevitable destination for every tourist.
Private tours by boat during the day and at night, or trough a shuttle boat, are organised from this wonderful beach to arrive in the fascinating small beaches or mortises full of sun of the Amalfi coast and it is also possible to rent rowing or motor boats, canoes, pedalos, ligurian fishing boats and rubber dinghies.
The fishing activity
unlike all the other villages of Amalfi, is a firm and unalterated tradition. Every morning fischrmen sell their cath to people who desire to taste the real products of the sea.
In restaurants it is possible to taste dishes of fish, prepared according to the old tradition recipies.
Between the local products it is impossible not to taste the famous limoncello, the spirit obtained by the unique lemons of the Amalfi coast, and it also difficult also not to try the liquor obtained by the fennel, laurel and mandarin and the delicious limoncello-flavoured babà. |
